Sedation
Pediatric sedation can be useful for when kids have trouble sitting still for extended periods of time. Some visits to the dentist can take awhile, such as filling cavities or addressing other maladies. Sedation can help with this.
Nitrous
Nitrous oxide is the first level of sedation and the most common. It has a calming effect and also anaesthetizes pain, which is useful for fillings, root canals, or any situation where your child may feel uncomfortable.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is typically a pill that partially sedates patients. It’s similar to nitrous in the sense that your child won’t feel any pain and will be still, but can be useful as an alternative in cases where your child has a sensitivity to nitrous.
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia involves bringing a patient fully unconscious, and is reserved for longer appointments.
Our staff undergoes annual continuing education to stay up on the latest requirements and advancements in pediatric dental sedation. We only use sedation with discretion when it’s necessary. If you think it would help your child on an upcoming visit or are curious about anything, please ask us during the appointment and we’ll explain the process.
We don’t want your child’s experience to be longer or more complex than necessary, though, so we can determine during the exam whether sedation would be appropriate or not.
